“Nothing says “today’s GOP” like an unwed teen mom with no relationship with her child’s father sanctimoniously lecturing a happily married father of two well-adjusted, happy kids about parenting.”
The GOP is trying to take access to the Federal Child Tax Credit (CTC) away from Legal foreign workers living in the US by claiming that the money is going to illegal immigrants.
In response to a treasury department audit where it was found that 4.5 billion dollars in CTC funds has gone to legal alien residents who are not authorized to work in the US but are given Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) and are expected to file taxes. These legal aliens have been claiming the CTC but the law is currently unclear on their eligibility to do so. In response the GOP is demanding that only filers with a valid SS# should be allowed to collect for the CTC to prevent illegal immigrants from gaining the credit. But this isn’t an issue of illegal immigration, what this will do is bar any legal immigrants who have a ITIN instead of a SS# from having access to the CTC.
Whatever your opinion is about if legal foreign workers ought to be eligible for the CTC and other tax credits everyone should be disgusted with the way the GOP is playing the illegal immigrant card to take benefits away from legal ones.
“Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community — it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall.”
Extremism and conflict make for bad politics but great TV. Over the past two decades, conservatism has evolved from a political philosophy into a market segment. An industry has grown up to serve that segment—and its stars have become the true thought leaders of the conservative world. The business model of the conservative media is built on two elements: provoking the audience into a fever of indignation (to keep them watching) and fomenting mistrust of all other information sources (so that they never change the channel).
If I can give you only one reason why public transportation is awesome, it’s that you could converse for half an hour with a stranger about the soothing comedy of political memes (because talking about the weather gets boring after a while).
During our conversation this evening, we decided the only good way to understand memes is in the context of understanding how this circus functions.
